#365DaysofLondonBaby – Day 21 – Sonos Studios

Its almost weekend! In case you find yourself in Shoreditch or simply need an injection of creativity or hipsterism, check out the Sonos Studio in Club Row.

During a recent stroll through Shoreditch, I had the urge for a good cup of coffee. I was in Redchurch street at that time, so the first place that came into my mind was Allpress (58 Redchurch Street). But the lines were long as usual, so I spotted a small sign just a corner further, pointing to a place that I had not noticed before – 21 Club Row, just off Redchurch street.

Originally, I thought it was just “another hipster space”, but it did have a different vibe – literally, because of a superb sound system. An explanation of the space revealed why – it’s the second “Sonos Studio” in the world. Sonos uses it for showcasing its brand. They define it as

“A space for listening….Unique, acoustically tunable space where anyone can go to hear music as it should sound. An old building, rooted in an industrial part of the city, updated to keep pace with the changing time nad community around it. A social, collaborative space devoted to experiences built around music, art, and technology.”

The Lobby and stairs to listening rooms

In building the space (designed by Brinkworth Studio), they reserved architectural integrity of tbe building and also lining it completely acoustically (foot of mineral wool and triple-skinned wall) and even added “sound lock mid lobby”. The Timber floor has been re-used from former BBC world service studios at Bush House on the Strand. All art work inspired by technology and ways of experiencing sound.

As you can see on the picture, even the ceiling has been designed with the sound in mind – its a tunable ceiling can be lowered /shaped / adapted depending on music / sound played.

That all might sound daunting – its really not. You can also treat it as a space for coffee, small food (brunch food like eggs / sandwiches), hanging out, working with your laptop – just as many spaces in Shoreditch. It tends to be not too crowded, so that’s a plus.

If you are a sound geek though, then you’ll most certainly be thrilled that they also have 2 rooms upstairs to listen to music and try out the sound – one programmable, immersive listening gallery and an intimate listening room.

Enjoy and happy weekend!
